Welcome to Fake and Basic!
Hey! I’m Marty. Welcome to Fake and Basic.
Here, I write about everything from unsettling dates with random strangers to why I love Tinky-Winky the purple Teletubby to existential thoughts I have before every one of my birthdays. I also post photo tours from my travels, productivity tips, and insights from the personal projects I do each month. Basically, I brain-dump all of my observations and experiences on here. Niches are overrated. ????
I’m a 23-year-old writer and photographer (he/him) based in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a kid, I carried a notebook everywhere I went (and went plenty of places I shouldn’t have in search of a good story). Growing up was rough, mostly because I had a lot of social gender dysphoria. I thought that art was “too feminine” to pursue and gave it up in lieu of being materially successful. In January of 2018, I came out as transgender and started to embrace the things I actually liked, a big part of which was being artistic and doing creative projects for fun.
I graduated college in May 2018 and moved to San Francisco two weeks later to begin a career in software engineering. It didn’t take me long to realize that I liked writing words more than I liked writing code. These days, I’m a technical writer at Google by day an essay writer at Fake and Basic whenever I can fit in the time. I also like to go on long, immersive adventures. A lot of these adventures involve planes. This screws up my sleep schedule sometimes, but I think it’s worth it.
About Fake and Basic
Fake and Basic started out as a fashion blog, then became a productivity blog, and is now a long-form lifestyle blog about literally everything my brain can think of. I have a lot of interests and you’ll find me talking about them all on here.
As of August 2019, each month’s content will revolve around a cohesive theme. I’ll be exploring each theme through all sorts of content — confessional pieces, informational essays, rants, those song-inspired pictures I occasionally do. You can read more about themed series here.
If you have any theme or content ideas, don’t hesitate to let me know!
