Robert Is Here Fruit Stand

Location: Florida City, Florida

It all started with some bee pollen.

During my first year of college, one of my friends had told me about his high school habit of eating a spoonful of bee pollen a day. Bee pollen is a superfood that boosts your immune system; this friend claimed that he’d never gotten sick when he was taking it regularly.

“That’s something I need in my life,” I told him. “Where can I buy it?”

Robert is Here [1] in Florida City,” he replied.

I took the pollen regularly throughout college and it indeed kept me from feeling weak or sick.  Since then, I’ve been stopping by Robert is Here every time I pass through Florida City on my way to Miami. Despite being called a “fruit stand”, Robert is Here is actually a permanent establishment. There are tons of exotic fruits, homemade jams, and live animals running around. I love picking up a ton of bee pollen and getting a fresh cold coconut whenever I come here.

There are a bunch of coconuts floating in ice water by the door; you can ask the person at the register to cut a hole in the top so that you can have it right away. I like to enjoy mine while wandering around the premises.

Note: This article is part of my January 2019 One Month Project, where I will be traveling around coastal Florida and publishing an essay a day about my experiences there. I’m excited to bring you along on this adventure!

Notes

[1] The somewhat strange name comes from the owner, Robert, whose family had a farm. When Robert was six years old, he opened up a fruit stand by the side of the road to help his dad sell produce, and his dad made two signs that said “Robert is Here” on the side of the table to catch people’s eyes. It’s been a thing ever since.
